IOC President Kirsty Coventry Praises China's Sports Culture and Olympic Legacy (2025)

China's sporting prowess is making waves! During her recent visit, International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry, since taking office in June, was clearly impressed by China's vibrant sports culture, top-notch infrastructure, and ongoing contributions to the Olympic Movement.

Coventry, leading an IOC delegation from November 8th to 13th, shared her observations of the National Games with Xinhua. She was particularly struck by the opening ceremony, describing it as an 'incredible' showcase of culture, sport, and technology.

The scale of the event was also a major highlight, co-hosted for the first time by Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao, with approximately 25,000 athletes participating. This demonstrated the country's huge enthusiasm for sports, according to Coventry.

But here's where it gets interesting: Coventry also praised the inclusion of Wushu in the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, after witnessing competitions in Guangzhou. She found the sport captivating, noting how effortlessly the athletes performed their movements. She expressed excitement about its debut in Dakar.

Having achieved Olympic success herself, particularly at Beijing 2008, Coventry emphasized China's continuing importance to the Olympic Movement. She highlighted China as a strong partner, from whom the Olympic Movement consistently learns.

During her visit, Coventry also met with three Chinese Olympic TOP partners – Alibaba, TCL, and Mengniu – and applauded their shared values with the Olympic Movement. These partners, as part of the highest level of Olympic sponsorship, have exclusive global marketing rights to the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

As the IOC's first female and African president, Coventry reinforced her commitment to strengthen collaboration with China. She stated that they look forward to deepening this collaboration to share best practices globally.

Now, what do you think? Do you agree with Coventry's assessment of China's impact on the Olympic Movement? Are you excited about the inclusion of Wushu in the Youth Olympic Games? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
