A Shifting Media Landscape: Unveiling Global Industry Moves

The Future of Argentine Television: A New Chapter Unveiled

In a bold move, Skydance's Paramount has decided to part ways with its Argentinian broadcast network, Telefé, marking a significant shift in the country's media landscape. The network has been acquired by local businessmen Gustavo Scaglione and José Luis Manzano, who are set to take the reins of this iconic television benchmark. With a reported deal value of around $100 million, this transaction represents a substantial departure from Paramount's predecessor Viacom's acquisition of Telefé for $345 million nine years ago.

Kevin MacLellan, Paramount's President of Global Content Distribution and International Media, expressed confidence in Telefé's continued growth and success under its new local management. This strategic decision by Paramount, which has been seeking a buyer for some time, highlights the evolving nature of media ownership and the potential for local expertise to drive innovation.

A Transatlantic Partnership: Bell Media and Tubi Team Up

Across the pond, Canada's Bell Media and Fox's ad-supported streamer, Tubi, have joined forces in a wide-ranging pact. This collaboration will see them collaborate on ad sales and content distribution, leveraging Bell's extensive catalog and FAST channel lineup. The partnership extends to original content development for Tubi's global streaming service and Bell's Canadian platforms, with Bell's international content distribution business, Sphere Abacus, playing a key role.

Since its launch in Canada, Tubi has experienced remarkable growth, reaching an impressive one-in-three adults over 18 in the country. This deal builds upon the October 2023 partnership between Bell and Fox, which focuses on creating Canadian originals with a dual audience appeal, playing on CTV and Crave in Canada and broadcast in the U.S.

The UK's YouTube Preferences: A Shift Towards American Content

A recent study by Digital-i has revealed an intriguing trend in the UK's YouTube viewing habits. It appears that Brits are turning their attention away from local content, particularly in the realms of entertainment, gaming, and news and politics. During the first half of 2025, YouTube users in the UK were less inclined to engage with content from their own country compared to their counterparts in France, Italy, Germany, Spain, and the U.S.

While British channels still accounted for a significant 40% of the top 30 most-watched channels in these genres, local networks dominated the top 30s elsewhere, comprising between 83% and 97%. Interestingly, UK gaming channels were notably absent from the top ten, although nine out of ten politics and news channels were British. This shift in preferences underscores the global nature of online content consumption and the appeal of American channels to UK audiences.

These global media developments showcase the dynamic and ever-evolving nature of the industry, with companies adapting to new trends and partnerships to stay relevant and competitive. As we navigate this shifting landscape, it's essential to stay informed and engaged, especially as these moves can have a profound impact on the content we consume and the stories we tell.
